Tony's Take
The project: Remix the legendary Frampton Comes Alive in 5.1 surround.
We received all the recordings from that tour on two-inch analog. Every show, every song on the tour that became ‘Frampton Comes Alive’ arrived at the studio after being in storage for 25 years. Peter was on hand for the entire process and made sure we had the correct performance for each song. The bulk of the album came from four shows in particular.
It was quite the process to resurrect those recordings. The 2" analog tape had to be ‘baked’ in a convection oven for hours at a low temperature to remove moisture and prevent the tape from shedding itself all over the tape heads. We then transferred the very performances that were on the original Frampton Comes Alive to a digital format, I believe at that time we used Radar for archiving and from Radar we transferred the audio into the hard drive of the console- the SSL Axiom. The SSL Axiom allowed us to mix in 5.1 surround and stereo simultaneously. The attached song 'It's a Plain Shame' is a stereo fold down of the 5.1 surround mix.
